Weekly Insight /
Weekly Insight — Read together, this week resolves into a single argument about chokepoints — the old human instinct to govern a complex world by seizing a few narrow passages. The Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb; the tariff line drawn at the Canadian border; the compute embargo meant to bottle up frontier AI; the age-gate France built around childhood and the feeds. Five different powers, in five different domains, all reaching for the same lever: find the pinch point, hold it, and you command the flow that runs through it.
I have come to think chokepoint power is the most overrated instrument of our moment. Iran can shut Hormuz and push oil past $100 a barrel, but the closure summons its own undoing — the Houthis widen the war into the Red Sea, insurers reprice, cargoes reroute, and every month of blockade quietly teaches the world to need that strait a little less. Washington drew a compute line around Nvidia to keep frontier AI scarce; a 2.8-trillion-parameter open model out of Beijing walked around the wall and posted the top coding score anyway. Tariffs at a border redirect trade rather than end it. Networked, substitutable systems treat a blockade the way a river treats a dam that is too short — they route around the obstruction, and the pinch point leaks. The lesson I keep drawing is that in a densely connected world durable power comes from redundancy and adaptation, not from a hand on the valve.
And yet there is one chokepoint this week that deserves more fear than any missile: the quiet draining of oxygen from the planet's waters, which scientists now place in an "unsafe" zone. It is the perfect inversion of the others — a real, physical threshold, with no substitute and no reroute — and it is precisely the one we are ignoring while we fight over the illusory ones. That is the asymmetry I find most telling: we lavish fleets, capital and export-control regimes on chokepoints we cannot actually hold, and almost nothing on the one that will eventually hold us. If I had to name a single discipline for the decade ahead, it would be learning to tell those two kinds of chokepoint apart.
Top of the Week — The 2026 Iran war is the week's gravitational center. What began as a fight over the Strait of Hormuz has metastasized into Red Sea tanker strikes, US bombing runs, and crude above $100 — and its shockwaves are visible in every equity index, insurance premium and shipping lane on this list.
01 · The 2026 Iran War Escalates as Oil Tops $100 / 2026
Summary — The US–Iran conflict widened sharply this week after a June truce collapsed, with US forces striking roughly 140 Iranian military targets in three rounds and Iran attacking shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. On July 23 crude oil topped $100 a barrel for the first time since May after Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis claimed to have hit two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea, opening a second maritime front. Tehran said it struck five Gulf states — Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar and Oman — in response to renewed US bombing, and it has moved to shut the strait through which roughly a fifth of the world's oil passes. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the situation was "getting out of control," as flights were halted and global cargoes rerouted.

Why it matters — This is the story with the widest blast radius: it sets the oil price, spooks equity markets, raises insurance and freight costs, and reroutes global trade all at once. It also stress-tests the most famous chokepoint on earth — and the early evidence is that closure hurts Iran's leverage as fast as it hurts everyone else, because buyers adapt. Watch whether the Bab al-Mandeb front, not Hormuz, becomes the real pressure point.
02 · Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Goods /
Summary — On July 20 President Trump signed three proclamations under Section 338 of the 1930 Tariff Act imposing additional 50% tariffs on a broad range of Canadian imports, from wine to hockey sticks to cement, citing what he called Canada's "discriminatory" treatment of American products. The duties take effect in 30 days and notably reach goods previously shielded by the USMCA free-trade pact, though energy products, potash, fish and critical minerals are exempted. Trump framed the move as leveling the field for US cars, alcohol and dairy exports. Analysts read the escalation as a warning shot to other trading partners.

Why it matters — Punching through the USMCA signals that even ratified trade agreements now offer little protection when a chokepoint at the border is politically useful. For markets it revives tariff-driven inflation risk just as oil is spiking. And it hands every other US trading partner a preview of the leverage they may soon face.
03 · Russia and Ukraine Trade Deadly Strikes as Zelensky Heads to Washington /
Summary — Russia and Ukraine continued to exchange heavy attacks this week, with at least 15 people reported killed in Russian strikes on July 24, some targeting a Ukrainian defense-industry event. Ukrainian drones struck warehouses belonging to Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries near Saint Petersburg, extending Kyiv's campaign deep into Russian logistics. President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet President Trump next Tuesday, hoping to secure expanded US support, especially air defense. The meeting follows Trump's earlier decision to grant Ukraine a license to produce Patriot interceptors.
Excerpt — "Reports on Friday afternoon said that Zelenskyy will meet with United States President Donald Trump next Tuesday."
Why it matters — With Washington's attention consumed by Iran, Ukraine is fighting to stay on the agenda — and the Patriot production license marks a shift from donating weapons to enabling Kyiv to build its own. The deep strikes on Russian logistics show the war grinding into an economic-attrition phase where each side targets the other's industrial base rather than just the front line.

Summary — On July 16 Beijing-based Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight, sparse Mixture-of-Experts model with a one-million-token context window — the largest open-weight model yet released. Within hours it jumped from #18 to #1 on the Frontend Code Arena leaderboard with a score of 1,679, overtaking Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol, and also led the SWE Marathon and Program Bench benchmarks. It debuted at #4 overall on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index. Notably, Moonshot achieved this while working around US compute export limits.

Why it matters — This is the clearest sign yet that US chip-export controls are slowing but not stopping China's frontier AI, and that open weights are closing the gap with the best closed labs. An open model at the top of a production-coding benchmark reshapes the economics for every company that was paying for a proprietary API. It is the compute-embargo chokepoint, visibly leaking.

05 · SpaceX Flies Starship in First Test Since Its IPO / SpaceX 星舰完成 IPO 后首飞
Summary — SpaceX launched its massive Starship rocket on the evening of July 24 from Starbase, Texas — its first flight test since the company's blockbuster IPO. The Super Heavy booster separated about two minutes in and made a controlled splashdown in the Gulf, while the Starship upper stage achieved a "soft splashdown" in the Indian Ocean despite engine issues. NASA welcomed the mostly successful flight, as it is counting on a variant of the upper stage to serve as the lunar lander for the Artemis program. It was one of several SpaceX launches this week, including its 85th Falcon 9 flight of the year.

Why it matters — As a newly public company, SpaceX now flies under the scrutiny of shareholders, and a mostly successful Starship keeps the Artemis Moon timeline — and a large slice of NASA's human-spaceflight strategy — on track. The cadence, an 85th Falcon 9 of the year alongside a Starship test, underlines how thoroughly one firm now dominates access to orbit.

06 · France Becomes First EU Nation to Ban Social Media for Under-15s / 法国成欧盟首个禁止 15 岁以下用社媒的国家
Summary — On July 21 both chambers of France's parliament approved a blanket ban on social media use by children under 15, making France the first EU country to enact such a law and delivering a flagship goal of President Macron's second term. The law requires platforms to introduce age-verification checks and will close the accounts of under-15 users, while also banning phones in high schools and tightening rules on how platforms are advertised. Digital Minister Anne Le Henanff said personal data would be protected during verification. France joins more than 20 countries moving to regulate children's access to online platforms.

Why it matters — France is drawing an age-gate — a chokepoint around childhood — and how well it holds will shape whether the rest of Europe follows. The hard problem is enforcement: robust age verification collides directly with privacy, and platforms have every incentive to make compliance leaky. This is the year the "protect kids online" debate moves from rhetoric to legally binding machinery.
07 · Global Markets Whipsaw on Iran Fears and a Chip Sell-Off / 全球市场因伊朗恐慌与芯片抛售剧烈震荡
Summary — Wall Street swung through a volatile week as surging oil and the widening Iran war collided with an otherwise strong earnings season. The S&P 500, which had notched 24 record closes in the first half of the year, closed little changed on Friday, July 23, as "Iran fears" and a semiconductor sell-off weighed on sentiment. Tesla shares fell about 2.6% after a second-quarter earnings miss, and worries about ballooning AI capital spending unsettled the biggest tech names. Even so, of the 95 S&P 500 companies that had reported, 88% beat estimates by a median of about 7%.

Why it matters — The market's split personality — record-setting earnings against geopolitical dread — captures the central tension of the moment: fundamentals are strong, but the tail risks (a Gulf war, an AI-capex bubble, tariff inflation) are fat and correlated. The Tesla miss and AI-spending jitters also hint that investors are starting to demand returns, not just narrative, from the AI build-out.
08 · Scientists Warn Earth's Waters Are Losing Oxygen at an "Unsafe" Rate /
Summary — A major review paper led by scientists at UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography warns that oxygen is disappearing from oceans, lakes, rivers and coastal waters fast enough to push Earth toward an "unsafe" space, with consequences that could be irreversible on human timescales. The study, published in Limnology and Oceanography, argues that aquatic deoxygenation should be treated as a planetary boundary in its own right, tightly coupled to warming, nutrient pollution, biodiversity loss and ocean acidification. The primary drivers are human-caused warming, excess nutrient runoff and changes in how interior waters are ventilated. Once oxygen is lost, the authors caution, recovery pathways are limited.
Excerpt — "The rapid loss of oxygen from the ocean and other aquatic ecosystems is pushing Earth toward an 'unsafe space,' with consequences that could be irreversible on human timescales."
Why it matters — This is the chokepoint with no reroute. Unlike a strait or a tariff line, dissolved oxygen has no substitute and no workaround, and its thresholds are set by physics, not policy. The finding matters because it reframes deoxygenation from a niche marine concern into a systemic planetary risk that compounds every other environmental crisis at once — and it is receiving a fraction of the attention we spend on chokepoints we cannot actually control.

09 · FDA Approves Gedatolisib, a First-in-Class Breast Cancer Drug / FDA 批准同类首创乳腺癌新药 gedatolisib
Summary — On July 14 the US FDA approved gedatolisib (brand name Revtorpyk, from Celcuity) in combination with fulvestrant, with or without palbociclib, for adults with HR-positive, HER2-negative, PIK3CA wild-type advanced or metastatic breast cancer that has progressed after endocrine therapy. It is the first and only approved therapy to inhibit all four class I PI3K isoforms plus both mTOR complexes simultaneously, a mechanism distinct from existing single-target drugs. In the Phase 3 VIKTORIA-1 trial, the drug plus palbociclib and fulvestrant cut the risk of disease progression or death by 76%, and by 67% when combined with fulvestrant alone. Reporting described it as the first drug specifically for a large group of metastatic patients who previously had no targeted options.

Why it matters — Breast cancer is the world's most common cancer, and this approval fills a real gap for PIK3CA wild-type patients who had few targeted options after endocrine therapy failed. A 67–76% reduction in progression-or-death risk is a clinically meaningful result, and the multi-target mechanism could open a broader design space for the whole PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway.

10 · India's Wangchuk Ends 26-Day Hunger Strike as "Cockroach" Protests Swell /
Summary — Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk ended a 26-day hunger strike on July 23, a fast that helped galvanize one of India's largest recent protest movements. He had been fasting in central New Delhi in solidarity with the founder of the Gen Z-led "Cockroach Janta Party," demanding that Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resign over exam-paper leaks that affected millions of students. Wangchuk, who was briefly hospitalized against his will during the fast, said he ended it after "a long negotiation on various conditions" and out of concern over "possible violence in the country." Protesters vowed to continue until the minister steps down.

Why it matters — A Gen Z-led movement built around exam integrity is a revealing pressure gauge for the world's most populous democracy, where education is the primary ladder of mobility and paper leaks read as a betrayal of that promise. That the movement outlasted its most famous faster's fast suggests durable, decentralized organizing rather than a single-leader campaign — the kind of networked protest that is hard for any government to switch off.
